Mohamed Sabaana, Cartoonist

Mohamed Sabaana is a Palestinian cartoonist who expressed the Palestinian people daily suffering due through his cartoons, which now tell his own story after he spent five long months in an Israeli prison. At Al Jalama prison, where Sabaana was a prisoner for 60 days during investigation, in “cell 28”, which became the name of the cartoonist exhibition that was opened early this month.

The exhibition “cell 28” holds a group of Sabaana’s cartoons that he drew while detained. Images he drew to express with no words the Palestinian prisoners’ issues and suffering.

“I never thought about giving up my cartoons during detention, not even for a second! On the contrary, my reality experience in a prison made me more determined to keep up my work and deliver the Prisoners messages to the whole world”. Says Sabaana

Sabaana’s cartoons were not limited to criticizing the Israeli occupation, but they also criticized and brought up bad Palestinian Societal and political phenomena, particularly the bad reality of freedom of opinion and expression in Palestine that is expressed in Sabaana’s cartoons.

Sabaana’s story is one example among 101 journalists who were arrested by the Israeli Occupation Forces IOF between 2008 and 2012 in Palestine, where Israel continues to arrest journalists without being held accountable!
