MADA hosts popular World Press Freedom Day event in Gaza


5 May 2011: The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) hosted an event in celebration of World Press Freedom Day in Alsamak hall in the Gaza Strip on the evening of 3rd May 2011.


More than 200 journalists, including media outlet and NGO representatives, attended the event, which opened with the observation of one minute’s silence in remembrance of journalists killed in the line of duty.

The event resumed with the screening of a MADA produced video clip honouring Palestinian photographers suffering under the Israeli Occupation Forces.

MADA also paid tribute to the families of press martyrs Fadel Shanaá, Omar Silawi, Ihab Wahedi, Basel Farraj, Ala’Murtaja, the Italian journalist Vitorio Arrigonithe; and photographers Maher Almadhoun and Imad ghanim who were seriously injured during the last aggression against Gaza.

MADA coordinator Dr. Ahmad Hammad concluded the event with an awards ceremony, presenting prizes to the winners of MADA’s award for freedom of expression.
