The Coalition to Defend Freedom of Expression in Palestine condemns the Interior Ministry of Gaza Strip’s decision to dissolve the Sharek Youth Forum in Gaza, on Monday 12 July 2011. The ministry’s order for the forcible closure of the centre was on the pretext that the Gaza branch of Sharek does not hold a license, and as such is in violation of the rules of the General System according to an investigation conducted by the General Attorney of Gaza.

The coalition emphasizes that this decision constitutes a violation of Palestinian Basic Law in regards to charitable organizations and stands in deliberate contravention to the law of associations and civil organizations, particularly Article 37 of Chapter 8. In its statement, Sharek Forum said that the Interior Ministry did not previously present them with any documentation or warnings that their centre was in violation of administrative or financial laws, and that there were no pending cases against them registered with the judiciary.

These illegal procedures in dealing with such cases open the door to further violations, not only in freedom of expression, but also of all fundamental human rights guaranteed under Palestinian Basic Law and international laws.

The Coalition to Defend Freedom of Expression in Palestine demands that the Interior Ministry in Gaza reverse their decision to dissolve the forum, and allow Sharek to continue working in all its branches in Gaza without hindrance or harassment.

The Coalition also calls for all NGOs in the occupied Palestinian territories to be allowed to work freely and safely, so they can continue their vital work in community development and human rights’ defense. The coalition fears that compliance with violations such as this will lead to the further deterioration of conditions in Palestinian communities and the status of freedom of expression, opinion and assembly in the territories.

It’s worth to mention that the coalition to defend freedom of expression in Palestine was formed on 13 February 2011, and includes 23 Palestinian human rights, women, media and youth organizations.
