MADA held a workshop about “Freedom of expression in international and Palestinian legislations”

The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) held a workshop about “Freedom of expression in international and Palestinian legislations", the workshop took place in Ritno hotel in Ramallah city. 

The workshop which was attended by a group of journalists, lasted four hours, and trained by Mr. Jihad Harb, and aimed to increase the awareness of journalists on principles of human rights in general, and the international legislation and Palestinian which relating to freedom of expression, particularly Article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Palestinian basic law. In addition to the mechanisms of journalist’s protection.

 

 

MADA’s Director Mousa Rimawi said that the workshop comes as part of a series of workshops that will be convened by MADA in the upcoming months in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as a part of “ Defending Journalists Rights in Palestine" project, which is funded by the Foundation for the Future. Rimawi added that MADA began from last May to provide legal advice for journalists and follow up their cases, which concerning freedom of opinion and expression. 

The participants emphasized on the important of implementing Article 19 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Palestinian Amended Basic Law, which guarantee the freedom of expression to journalists and people. They also agreed on the importance of local, regional an international media organization role in protecting journalists. They also stressed on the need for a strong syndicate, which works to embrace all journalists, defending their rights, and protect them.
