The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) rapped up 2-day training on digital rights for journalists in Hebron city.

The course tackled various aspects of the topic of digital rights, the right to access the Internet, access to information through it, exchange of information through it, local and international laws and legislations that dealt with this subject, and the advanced technology especially with regard to media and journalism work.

On the first day the training was conducted by the trainer M’amoun Matar, where he presented a definition of digital rights, the challenges faces digital rights especially at the local level, introducing the most important global digital rights, the right to communicate through modern technologies, clarifying the digital rights we need in Palestine and access to secure Internet. The trainer also referred to the violations practiced locally against journalists who publish on social media.

On the second day, the training was carried out by Mourad El-Sabaa, who dealt with the differences between digital media and other types of media, the use of digital media in the media, the new and different content it adds, and the media needed for digital media to be effective.

The coordinator of “combating self-censorship and promoting digital rights” project at MADA center Sharif Suleiman pointed to the importance of this training which will deepen the awareness of journalists and media workers about their digital rights, and introducing them to the new digital media, which has become a major influence in the field of media and information transfer, and its great role in the freedom of opinion and expression.

A total of 17 journalists attended the training and expressed by the end of it the importance of such training and the need to introduce journalists in Palestine to this subject matter. They called for more similar courses to strengthen their capacities in this field.

Certificates were distributed to participants at the end of the training, which is one of a series of trainings organized by MADA Center within this project.

This training is part a project funded by the European Endowment for Democracy and is part of a series of activities implemented by the MADA Center to raise awareness and knowledge of digital rights.
