During a meeting with “MADA”
The Attorney General Dr. Barak, Agrees to adopt a special prosecutor for freedom of expression.
Ramallah- 21/07/2016- the Attorney General Dr. Ahmad Barak stressed that there will be an adoption for a special prosecutor for freedom of expression and media freedoms in Palestine, he added that the Public Prosecution will include this inquiry filed by MADA within their next plan to determine a special prosecutor amongst who participated in previous workshop held by MADA in late 2014, in collaboration with the Public Prosecution, as part of a project which was funded by the EU, that aimed to enhance freedom of expression throughout a healthy legal environment.
This came in accordance to The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms " MADA"’s request during a meeting between a delegation from the center , headed by The General Director Mousa Rimawi with Dr. Barak , where they discussed several issues related to media freedoms in Palestine and the role of the public prosecution at this level .
Moreover, the Attorney General reiterated the public prosecution in Palestine not to detain journalists on issues related to freedom of expression.
He also welcomed the cooperation with MADA Center as a respect to all that would strengthen media freedoms and the role of media in Palestine, particularly, MADA’s effort related to intellectual property, which was initiated by MADA in collaboration with other institutions, rather than its cooperation in training public prosecution on freedom of expression matters.
Rimawi highly appreciated Dr. Barak’s response to these inquiries, stressing the importance of such initiations in promoting freedom of expression and media freedoms in Palestine that serves our people, he also stressed the importance of continuing the cooperation with the public prosecution in issues of common interest.
