“ECOSOC” granted MADA special consultative status

Ramallah- 19/04/2016: The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms “MADA”, received an official letter by The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at its Coordination and management meeting of April 2016, adopting the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) of granting MADA a special consultative status.

Mousa Rimawi the general director of “MADA” expressed his contentment and pride for granting MADA a special consultative status for the (ECOSOC) in the United Nations, which is a new achievement in MADAs’ accomplishments that were archived  since a decade, is also the best gift offered to MADA at this timing and as an international recognition of the prominence role of MADA.

Moreover, this membership will enhance MADAs’ presence in the international arena, particularly, that we already are an active member in several international networks and alliances such as (The Global Network Defending and Promoting Free Expression-IFEX-,Anna Lindh Foundation, Global Forum For Media Development-GFMD-, Press Emblem Campaign-PEC, The Freedom of Information Advocates Network-FOIAnet and Ethical Journalism Network- EJN).

Rimawi added,  that this achievement casts more burdens and makes us realize how huge the responsibility is, nonetheless we are confident that the center will not hesitate to intensify its efforts to defend media freedoms, and the promotion of freedom of expression in Palestine, and the contribution to the development of the role of media in the society and legal reforms advocating and implementing changes in a legal system that particularly works for media, and promoting the importance of respecting intellectual property and digital rights in Palestine.

It’s also significant to highlight that granting MADA a consultative status provides it with access not only to the ECOSOC, but also to its many subsidiary bodies, to the various human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, ad-hoc processes on small arms, as well as special events organized by the President of the General Assembly, rather than submitting the quadrennial reports, It will also enhance MADAs’ contribution to support the development aims of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations at large, throughout the protection mechanisms and the preparations of parallel/ shadow reports.
