Ramallah- 15/6/2015 The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) wrapped up a two-day training workshop for journalistsfrom cities south of the West Bank on the subject of freedom of expression and media legislations. The training took place in Bethlehem

On the first day of the training, the lawyer Raed Abdul Hamid presented media laws, legal protection for journalists and privacy rules. He explained the work of the judiciary and the rules of media coverage of judiciary news.

He also explained the actions regarded as crimes in the Jordanian penal law, i.e. defamation, slander, libel, and the differences between them. The training included practical activities and an open discussion.

Abdul Hamid also explained the international law that rules media and the right to access information law.

On the second day of the training, the trainer Majed Saleh presented the international and national concepts of freedom of expression and its status in Palestine, as well as the negative impacts of the violations against freedom of expression on the media and society.

Saleh emphasized that journalists should be aware of the laws that rule their profession, he also opened a discussion on the differences between slander and libel.

At the end of the training, certificates were handed to all participants. This course comes in the framework of the project “Defending freedom of expression and opinion through a healthy legal environment” funded by the European Union. MADA started implementing this project at the beginning of the last year.
