Ramallah- 23/4/2015: The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) wrapped up a two-day training workshop on freedom of expression for media students of Al-Najah University. This workshop is part of the project of “Defending freedom of expression and opinion through a healthy legal environment” which is funded by the European Union.
The workshop which targeted 16 media students, aimed to raise the students’ awareness about the subjects related to freedom of expression and its status in Palestine, as well as the negative impact of the violations on the media and the society development.
On the first day, the trainer Jihad Harb presented international and national concepts of freedom of expression and its status in Palestine, as well as the negative impacts of the violations against freedom of expression on the media and society. Harb gave an overview of the Palestinian laws related to the media.
On the second day the trainer Fadi Shadeed presented media laws, legal protection for journalists and privacy rules. He explained the work of the judiciary and the rules of media coverage of judiciary news. He also explained the actions regarded as crimes in the Jordanian penal law, i.e. defamation, slander, libel, and the differences between them.
The participants thanked MADA for conducting this useful training. At the end of the training, MADA’s general manager Mr. Mousa Rimawi and the chairman of the Media Center at Al-Najah University Dr. Abdulkarim Sarhan handed certificates to all participants. Mr. Rimawi thanked the participants and Media Center and Al-Najah University staff for their cooperation to implement this workshop.
