The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) organized a training session for Birzeit University Law students as part of their course on Human Rights Law. MADA’s General Director Mr. Mousa Rimawi gave a detailed presentation of the status of media freedoms and freedom of expression in Palestine as well as MADA’s programs and activities in this field. The training was attended by journalist Yousef Shayeb who presented his own experience of media rights violations, and by MADA’s lawyer Mr. Ra’ed Abdulhamid who explained the legal aspects of Youssef’s case. A discussion ensued on the laws that govern the media, especially the articles related to libel and slander according to the Jordanian Penal Code of 1960 which is in vigor in the West Bank. The participants also discussed the harassment faced by journalists and activists on the basis of their writings and comments on Facebook.
