Ramallah – 24 March 2026 – The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) condemns the ongoing violations against media freedoms in Palestine, particularly the repeated arrests of journalists. Yesterday, Monday, 23 March 2026, Israeli occupation forces arrested journalist LAMA THEEB ABU KHATER (48 years old) after raiding her home in the city of Hebron. MADA considers this action a grave violation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as well as a direct assault on journalistic and civil work, aimed solely at silencing voices that speak out against the injustices perpetrated by the occupation forces against Palestinian citizens across the region.
The arrest of journalists and writers based on their professional activity or opinions undermines the fundamental rights guaranteed under international conventions, foremost among them the right to freedom of expression and access to information. Such practices contribute to creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation and negatively affect journalists’ ability to fulfill their role in conveying the truth.
MADA emphasizes that targeting journalists for their work or opinions is unjustifiable under any circumstances and constitutes a dangerous precedent that threatens media freedom and restricts civic space.
Accordingly, MADA calls for the immediate release of journalist LAMA ABU KHATER and an end to all forms of harassment and violations against journalists. The organization also urges the establishment of a safe environment that allows media professionals to perform their duties freely, without fear of persecution or arrest.
MADA further calls on relevant international bodies to uphold their legal obligations and take all necessary measures to protect press freedom, recognizing it as a cornerstone of any democratic society.
