Ramallah – 13 May 2025 The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) welcomes the decision by the Palestinian government to lift the ban on Al Jazeera’s operations in the Palestinian territories. The announcement came yesterday evening, Monday, when the Palestinian Ministry of Culture issued an official statement canceling the decision to suspend the broadcast of Al Jazeera Satellite Channel and lifting the restrictions on its operations in Palestine. The head of Al Jazeera’s office in Palestine, Walid Al-Omari, also confirmed the lifting of the ban after more than four months of suspension.
MADA considers this a positive and significant step toward strengthening freedom of opinion and expression and safeguarding journalistic freedoms in Palestine, in line with democratic values and relevant international standards.
Since its issuance, the ban has raised serious concerns among human rights and media communities, given its implications for media pluralism and the right to access information. MADA expressed its opposition at the time, reiterating its position in favor of respecting media freedoms and opposing restrictive measures, unless applied within the framework of the law and in a manner that ensures transparency and accountability.
MADA affirms that a free and independent press is a cornerstone of human rights protection and essential for fostering public accountability, especially amid the complex political and humanitarian conditions in the Palestinian territories and the urgent need to report the truth and document violations against journalists and media institutions in the field.
The lifting of the ban represents an opportunity to reaffirm the Palestinian authorities’ commitment to press freedom and respect for media pluralism. It also sends a positive message to both the local and international communities that Palestine is committed to promoting a free and safe media environment in which journalists can carry out their duties without fear or restriction.
In this context, MADA calls for strengthening this direction by conducting a comprehensive review of any decisions or practices that may restrict media freedoms and urges the development of relevant legislation to ensure alignment with international standards of freedom of expression.
MADA also emphasizes the importance of dialogue and partnership between official institutions, media outlets, and civil society organizations to ensure a media environment grounded in the rule of law and respect for human rights—one that contributes to building a democratic society founded on transparency and pluralism.
