MADA Calls on the Palestinian Government to Guarantee Freedom of Media Operations in the West Bank

Ramallah – 24th Dec. 2024 The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) expresses its concern for the safety of Palestinian journalists working for Al Jazeera TV following statements from some Fatah regional leaders advocating a ban on Al Jazeera’s operations in the West Bank. This move constitutes a severe violation of media freedoms and hinders the right to access information and media pluralism in Palestine.

MADA emphasizes that the diversity and plurality of media outlets are fundamental pillars of any democratic society. Restricting or suppressing the work of media outlets by any entity represents a grave regression in public freedoms, particularly media freedoms. Any political disputes or media criticisms must be addressed through dialogue based on legal and institutional frameworks, rather than restricting journalists or obstructing media institutions from fulfilling their role.

In light of the above, MADA calls for the following:

  1. The Palestinian government and law enforcement authorities must ensure the freedom of all media outlets to operate as part of pluralism and freedom of expression. They must reject policies of media restriction, respect journalistic freedom, and maintain neutrality in dealing with media institutions regardless of their affiliations. This is especially crucial during this critical and sensitive stage faced by the Palestinian people, while adhering to national and international laws that guarantee media freedom as a fundamental human right.
  2. The Palestinian government must provide security and safety for all media personnel and ensure a safe and professional environment for journalistic work in Palestine, free from political interference or partisan pressures.
  3. Constructive dialogue should be adopted as a means to address any disputes or misunderstandings instead of resorting to practices that restrict freedoms.
  4. All media outlets, whether local, Arab, or international, are urged to adhere to objectivity and impartiality in their coverage, taking into account the sensitive nature of the Palestinian situation at this challenging time.

MADA reaffirms its ongoing commitment to defending the rights of journalists and freedom of the press in Palestine. It calls on all parties to uphold their responsibilities in protecting these rights and ensuring the plurality of media voices in the country.
