20 journalists killed by IOF in Palestine in the last 10 years:
Ramallah- 23 November 2011: The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) today launched a campaign in honour of the International Day to End Impunity, which commemorates murdered journalists across the world and aims to end the impunity of perpetrators, in particular the Israeli Occupation Forces which have been responsible for numerous deaths of Palestinian journalists but have yet to be held accountable. This campaign comes as part of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange’s (IFEX) global campaign demanding justice for murdered journalists.
IFEX members - representing 95 international, regional and national organizations including MADA - decided during their general meeting in Beirut in June to mark November the 23rd as the annual day to end impunity, in the anniversary of the single deadliest attack on journalists in recent history: the 2009 Maguindanao massacre in the Philippines
As part of this campaign MADA will implement several activities, including a photo exhibition for journalists under attack in the Gaza Strip, promotional posters and a video short about the 20 journalists murdered by Israeli Occupation Forces since 2000 in Palestine. MADA will additionally participate in the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) global campaign.
In commemoration of this international day, MADA calls upon all human rights and media organizations to participate in the campaign and join the fight to end journalists suffering in the occupied Palestinian territories and raise global awareness of this issue. MADA also calls upon international bodies to exercise real pressure on the Israeli government to end military and settler attacks against journalists, which stand in direct contravention of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and demand for halting of all attacks against journalists in other countries, and to bring perpetrators to justice.
